Shanasheel are a unique ensemble within the Australian World Music scene, specialising in classical and folk repertoire from Iraq, Egypt, Syria and other regions of the Middle East. It was founded by Nawres Alfreh (an Iraqi born violinist/Arabic fiddle and Joza player) after he moved from Jordan to Australia.

The members of Shanasheel have played together for many years in other ensembles and have participated in many renowned and prestigious events, from the WOMAD Festival to Woodford Folk Festival. They are united by their passion for music that reflects the depth and richness of Arabic musical traditions.
